There is a "Positivity Challenge" going around on Facebook. I want to part take in the "challenge" but on my blog instead. So...
Day One:
1. I passed my Critical Thinking class with a "B!" It was touch and go all semester so don't ask me how that happened!
2. I ran across a "Little Couple" episode that I had never seen before so I watched it.
3. I went on a crazy long walk and caught up on Steven Furtick's #DeathtoSelfie sermons.
Day Two:
1. On my walk, I saw wild Turkeys- Mom and four babies.
2. Both families I work for expressed their gratitude for me today.
3. One of the girls I nanny for took a bath without tears! Hooray for shaving cream in the tub!
Day Three:
1. I made the cranky (seriously always cranky) lady at the DMV smile. #kindnesskills
2. I went to Costco with my parents and we had Chick- Fil- A for dinner.
3. I re- connected with an old co-worker and made plans to get together.
Day Four:
1. I went to the candy store with the bestie.
2. I ate at Cracker Barrel for the first time in years and it was amazing!
3. I watched Castle re- runs on ABC and they were all episodes I had never been before.
Day Five:
1. I heard my favorite song, "Beachin'" on the radio.
2. I tried a "Zero" candy bar. It's totally not as good as my "Nut Goodie" but I think that's because I am not a white chocolate fan.
3. I received a super sweet e-mail and had a comment left on my blog which made me happy.
Day Six:
1. I tried Sonic for the first time and thought it was disgusting! The people I were with liked it though.
2. I met with my new mentor teacher and we were at the coffee shop for two hours.
3. I went shopping! I bought a few new outfits and a bunch of children's books!
Day Seven:
1. I heard a song called, "Ticks." The lyrics were, "I wanna check you for ticks" and I burst out laughing hysterically.
2. I won a book from GoodReads!
3. I had a great day with the girls I nanny for! No tears in the tub and on our walk we saw a dead snake (GROSS!!). At the park we saw four dead baby birds and their nest laying on the ground, it was ridiculously sad but I am grateful for the learning opportunity for the kiddos.
Day Eight:
1. A close friend of mine gave me over 50 chapter books for my future classroom.
2. I tried Good Day Cafe for the first time and my Pulled Pork Sandwich was delicious!
3. I went shopping with my mom and we actually got along the whole entire time!!
Day Nine:
1. I volunteered at church.
2. I went out to eat with my family at my favorite restaurant.
3. I wrote my very first "Meet the Teacher" letter.
Day Ten:
1. I went to the dentist- No cavities!
2. I went to the eye doctor and my eyes have not gotten worse (I thought they had).
3. We had a good old- fashioned thunderstorm!

A Case of the Mondays
Last night at 10pm I was scrambling to get all my stuff ready to go for today. I was printing off and reading all my methods class lab expectations because lets face it, I am a procrastinator so I hadn't even opened these documents yet. I showered and got everything ready to go because I am most definitely not a morning person. I thought I was set up for a smooth successful morning but I was wrong. I woke up at 6:40 but my alarm wasn't set to go off until 7:10 so I tried to go back to sleep. At 7:10, I rolled over to check Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, e-mail and of course my text messages. At 7:12 my mom came in, "Aren't you supposed to be there at 8?" Oh crap!! I don't know what I was thinking but I needed to be at the school by 8am. I quick got up and ready to go in 20 minutes (this is why I showered last night) and I was out the door. Thankfully, I didn't hit any traffic on the way but I got to my exit and went left. My GPS told me to go right but I was convinced I knew where the school was. My GPS kept telling me to make a u- turn, but I did not do it. I got to the school that I was sure was it and guess what? That was the wrong school!! Keep in mind now it is 7:52 at this point. I quick pull in to the parking lot to turn around and of course, I can't get out of the parking lot... Cars just kept coming. So at 7:55 I pull out and I now have 5 minutes to get to the school. My GPS is saying I'm only four minutes away so I stay hopeful but know I will hit every light along the way. Amazingly, I hit all green lights so I pulled into the right school at 7:59. I practically darted out of my car and into the building. I got there and the doors were all locked. I pulled on one and this lady came over and directed me to the office door. I was in such a hurry I didn't even notice that there was a door to my left with a giant sign that read, "OFFICE." The lady in the office needed to make my nametag and said she would show me around the school so it did not appear that I was late even though I pretty much was.
Thankfully, from this point on my day went up. My classroom teacher is very nice and I think her and I will get along. People in the office said she was VERY excited to have a student teacher in her room so that is a good sign. She gave me a tour of the school and introduced me to other teachers and specialists. Her and I got to talking and realized we went to the same grade school. She was in middle school when I was in elementary school (same building though). I didn't recognize her maiden name but for all I know, she was my spirit buddy. I also taught her daughter when I did childcare. She was like, "I knew you looked familiar I just couldn't place you!"
Pretty much all I did today was observe her teaching and their routine. During morning meeting we played a ball toss greeting game. I thought I should probably sit down but then I thought I really should play so it looks like I have enthusiasm (we get graded on that you know). I played and at the end it was me and two boys. The teacher said, "J, you can greet Miss. S or K." He had a huge smile on his face and greeted me. I was to toss the ball to the other kid who of course had a name I could not pronounce. I had no idea how to say it so I took a guess and it was wrong. Oh well, I tried. I am determined to get his name right next time and I will. After all, isn't everyone's favorite word their own name? I had a win in the classroom today though. The kids had the opportunity to listen to books, read with a partner, read silently or do word work. My classroom teacher had a reading group so I was just walking around talking to students, making sure they were on task and observing. One girl who was working on word work came up to me with a card that showed a picture of a trick or treat bag. She asked me what the words said. I told her to try sounding it out. I wasn't sure if that was the right approach because everything I am reading for school pushes away from sounding out words. Anyway, she tried sounding it out and she got it! I celebrated quietly with her because the room was quiet but I feel as though I should've been more enthusiastic or asked for a high five. Next time that situation comes across, I will be more prepared- I'll get that high five!

Summertime Sadness
I've got that summertime, summertime sadness
S-s-summertime, summertime sadness
Got that summertime, summertime sadness
Oh, oh oh oh
Lana Del Rey, I can't get your song out of my head. My summer is over. I head back to school tomorrow. Oh, the sadness! Summer went way too fast which is expected when you take summer classes for 3/4s of your summer. Highlights of Summer 2013:
- The Global Leadership Summit was a great learning opportunity. It was very overwhelming because it was jam packed with information but it was a good two days non the less.
- I discovered Melissa and Joey and Mike and Molly both of which are fantastic shows and I would highly recommend them!
- "Date" (I use that term loosely) with a guy from high school. Oh my, the stories I have from that are great! FYI, ALWAYS have an exit strategy in place!
- Volunteering at church on the weekends. Always a great time!
- Kayaking with my bestie. You can read my story about that here.
- My predictable Saturday nights. 90% of the time it was dinner at My Burger, walk around the lakes, and Yogurt Lab.
- Internship at Primrose. What an experience that was!
- I was able to spend a lot of time with my favorite family! I've been babysitting for them for the past 11 almost 12 years. Incredible! We went to movies, parks, beaches. We did sleepovers, carnivals, and plays. The time I spent with this family was cherished and probably my favorite part of the summer.
- We finally figured out what is wrong with my dog... Almost a year later. We have her on allergy medicine and her hair is growing back and the dandruff is gone- Yay!
- The day Facebook announced click able hastags- Finally!
- The time Steven Collins from 7th Heaven tweeted me... :-D
- The day I was getting ready to go on a bike ride for the first time with G (girl I nanny for). I got on the bike and fell over into a box with the lawnmower. G started laughing. I got up and went to get G to put her on the bike and she started crying. I don't blame her, I wouldn't have trusted me either after witnessing that!
- Cinder Edna with Gloria! She came to my house after and I have the best picture ever of her holding my cat, Diesel!
- Tried Amazon Prime. Not for me. If you like movies, I say go for it. I hate movies, they don't keep my attention so Amazon Prime was not for me. Their TV selection was slim for watching TV for free. They have more of a selection than Netflix but they charge you $1.99 per episode.
- Late evening walks around the block with our cat on a leash.
- Bought a pizza maker! We had pizza at least once a week. Fattening but so very yummy!
- Meeting my cousins foreign exchange student Nicolas. His English was not so good but it was fun to be able to meet and talk with someone who lives in France!
- That night the 35W bridge was rainbow colors because Gay Marriage was legalized in Minnesota.
- 20 foot sinkhole in Robbinsdale. WOW!
- That sad day when Abby and Max moved out of our neighborhood to South Dakota. They were one of the first families I ever babysat for.
- I was able to work on an ongoing scrapbook I have for Gloria. I hope to give it to her the day of my wedding as I hope she will be a junior bridesmaid in my wedding!
- That 50 page cursive handwriting packet I had to complete for one of my classes- BS!
- The one year old I nanny for said my name for the very first time on 8/17/13.
- A couple sidenotes about the girl I nanny for. I posted this on Facebook a week ago: When G's vocabulary started to soar a month ago two of her favorite words were crumbs and "cean" aka clean. I'm definitely a product of my mother and I'm passing on my need for tidiness unto Miss G!
- For months now I can give G a wash cloth and she'll go around the house wiping everything and saying "Cean." If this was my kid, my mom would be so proud!
- Listening to Andy Stanley podcasts... One a day that was my goal. If you don't have the app, "Your Move" on your phone get it, you won't regret it!
- That sad day at the vet when I overheard the vet telling a girl my age that her dog may have heart failure. They took out a liter of fluid around the dogs lungs and will call her with the other test results. I felt prompted to go over and comfort her so I stood up and immediately started bawling. I couldn't get my words out at first, but gave her a hug. As we sat there petting her dog, we talked a bit and I told her I was praying for her. Putting an animal down is never easy, but I hope I was able to comfort and brighten her day just a little bit!
- That day I found out my neighbor Bob died :( He lost his battle with cancer 5 months after diagnosis. He was a great guy and will be missed. Our mailman took his dog which I think is an incredible testament to the kind of guy Bob was. He built up a relationship with the mailman one to the point where he felt comfortable asking him to take his dog when he passed. The day Bob died our mailman came for Boo. All the neighbors and neighbor dogs where at his house to say bye. The mailman's wife was in tears as she took giant bins of toys and boxes of treats that will last years. The mailman got in the car and Boo jumped right into his lap. I'm grateful for our mailman and the interest he takes in each of our lives.
- A couple side notes, when Bob's family came in from out of town they compared our neighborhood to Mister Roger's Neighborhood. Isn't that cool?! In a World where we tend to keep to ourselves and not get to know our neighbors my neighborhood is different. It's like a little community and I love it.
- Towards the end of Bob's life he was unresponsive but his eyebrows rose when you mentioned his wife and that he would be with her soon. He died the day before their anniversary, talk about soul mates!
- Saw a snake at a park. I would not consider this a highlight but something I want to remember. When I walk, I look at the ground- I'm watching for bugs. I did see a Daddy Long Legs and thought that would be my biggest concern but I was wrong. We saw a "baby" snake! He was slithering in between me and my friend. I obviously started screaming and then she started screaming. She ran up the hill which was the way we needed to go and I ran down the hill. I refused to go back up the hill even though Donna convinced me the snake was gone. She had to come all the way down the hill, take my hand, and go screaming and running up the hill with me. This is why I HATE the outdoors!!
- This is lame but I loved staying up until 3am playing the Sims. Addicting game! I used to build houses, have kids and once they grew from toddlers to children I'd quit the family. This summer, I discovered how much fun it is to play the kids all the way to adulthood. I had a list of who the teens were dating so I could keep track of it all... Pathetic for a person my age but I enjoyed it!
- The day we went to Bunker Beach. We paid $5 to get into the park. Realized it cost $14 to enter the water park where you then had to pay $6 for a small locker and then pay for tubes which cost separately. Yeah, we didn't even bother. Spent about 5 minutes in that park. Such a waste but I had good company!
Oh, and it gets better, today, my car's transmission went out... AGAIN! Maybe I am ready for summer to be over! ;)

Yogurt Lab
I tweeted this photo to Yogurt Lab the other week and they responded saying, "Great photo! Mind if we post it to FB?" Of course I didn't mind so they posted it to Facebook with the caption, "How fabulous is this photo?!" and it got 12 likes and a comment! That's more than any other photo ever posted on their wall! They tweeted me again later in the day saying, "We are just obsessed with this photo." I'm thinking I should've stayed with my Business major and pursued marketing for Frozen Yogurt Companies. ;)
